Own your body

Body image. You can toy with it, look at yourself in the mirror and start nitpicking. We all are different and to be honest, thank God! Can you imagine how uncomfortable it would be, if we were all the same copy? Boring!! Oh, here is the 20871523452416.09.05 version of the prototype. Yes, I am grateful this world doesn’t exist.

One of the first big problems, when you do not feel comfortable with your own skin, is the subject of the clothes. What to buy, where to buy it from and how to wear it. And even when you finally decide to indulge in some shopping, you hesitate to wear your new skirt, since you do not believe it looks good on you. Well, stop. No, really. Look at me. Take a deep breath and go in front your full bodied mirror. We are in this together, honey. Look at yourself. What do you see? Is it big thighs? Or maybe too long of a torso? Are you seeing big tummy, bad skin or very broad shoulders? If that is the case, you are one of the millions of fabulous humans out there that do not understand their worth. You see, we are not only skin, bones and hair. We are so much more. You have an amazing sum of memories, beautiful body and mind, gorgeous soul and mistakes. Everything you have encountered has given you all the tools, that are unique to you. You should be so proud of how you look, because it is all a matter of a subjective point of view. What you see as a flaw, someone else wishes it was theirs. Own it. Own your body and smile. Today we embrace all the bodies out there and it feels so good. No matter what is bothering you, you are stunning. Inside and out. Struggling with what you see is natural, but that should not be the case. Whoever said that you have to be of a specific size or height to be considered beautiful is wrong. As I said, we are meant to be different. We all have our baggage and parts of ourselves we do not particularly enjoy, but loving yourself takes time. When you get to that final stage of acceptance, though, it is so worth it. The feeling of freedom and happiness is overwhelming and you know you can conquer the world. It will be a rocky road and every day even the smallest win is magnificent. You don’t need anyone to tell you how you feel or bully you on how to perceive how you look. Rely on yourself and take that first step. So, today we are going to try something new. Look in that scary-looking mirror, that has the tendency of making your knees weak, and say :” I AM A WONDERFUL AND BEAUTIFUL PERSON. NO FLAWS ARE ENOUGH TO BRING ME DOWN, BECAUSE THEY SIMPLY DON’T EXIST. I OWN MY BODY AND SOUL AND I AM HAPPY WITH WHAT I SEE”. It will take less than a minute, trust me. Don’t be afraid. I had to talk myself up for years and I finally got to the point where no camera or mirror scares me. I told you, it will get personal, darlings.

I could keep going, but today I will finish with a picture of myself. In the past, I could start pin pointing everything wrong with it. But now, I am happy in my own skin and I even pose for the camera. A little slaying never hurt anyone, am I right?! I decided to wear long black leggings, with cut on the calf boots, big printed shirt with a white cardigan. See, this is where somebody could have said “Kallia, leggings and a bold print? Maybe you should opt for something different”. Well, being the person I am I would smile and politely ask them to use their opinion for something useful. Like educating themselves! I believe you can be anyone you want and wear anything you wish for that matter and still look radiant and absolutely fashionable. Today’s lifestyle has objectified everything and I think it’s time for a change. So, next time you like something, but feel like it wouldn’t match your body figure, think again.

  1. You are so right! I recently did a post on Body Shaming. Truth is if we were all meant to look alike we would and we need to stop letting others, which includes media tell us how we should look. You look amazing! Lovin the boots.

  2. Kallia, you are a gorgeous girl! I’ve wrote posts on body image/shaming before. I’m a model, very small waist but bigger hips and I’ve been told that I would be more plus size with my body’s ratio. I think it’s very important girls don’t get brainwashed with pictures they see in magazines, they aren’t a true likeness to the person in the flesh. We all have our flaws, insecurities and imperfections but do you know what? It makes us human and most importantly, it makes us us 🙂

    • Exactly! Thank you for your kind words! I hope everyone could see that all the imperfections are what makes us uniquely beautiful!! And if I may, never give up with what you do!! Have an awesome day 🙂

  3. Lovely inspiring post! Body image is such a lifelong journey, and every decade brings it’s own challenges. At the moment I’m adapting to having to hold things at arm’s length to read the small print and it is like whoa! How did this happen to ME?

  4. I think how well a person carries one’s self is what true beauty is. Being too self-conscious or having low self-esteem does damage. Which is why, I agree with you especially when it comes to positive declarations. It works.

  5. I have never been comfortable with my looks, especially now that I have gotten older. I do not think I will ever be comfortable with my looks or my body. I have never really had a very high opinion of myself. I was just not raised to think that way.

    • Oh, but you should have. Nobody has the right to tell you you do not look good, not even you. I hope this little exercise might help. Remember, baby steps darling!

  6. I like the metaphor that we are a sum of memories 🙂 You’re completely right that we are more than our looks and I’ve come to accept this as we’ve got older. That’s not to say I’m completely happy with my body but at least I’ve learnt there’s more to life!

    • Exactly. Sometimes it is good to take a step back and realize that there is so much more out there; but, loving yourself and owning it, is one of the most important achievements one can do! I am glad you liked it 🙂

  7. It’s always important to remind yourself that beauty is not dependent on others’ opinion or perception. It comes from deep within you. We are all different and we have our own special beauty. Love your positivity. As you said “Stay fashionable (and happy with yourself” I feel really inspired after reading your post!

  9. I know so many girls my age (18) that struggle with self image. It makes me so sad that we have grown up with social media and all of the negative things that go along with it. We are the first generation that has literally for the most part had access to social media since we could read!

    • Yes, it can be really troubling. It’s scary to think that we have to compare ourselves with photoshopped pictures of models in magazines and instagram. It’s not realistic and unfair! Thank you for commenting!

  10. This was beautifully put, we should own our bodies and not let the media tell us to reject who we are but unfortunately we do. I have always been self-conscious of my body and largely that is because I have been called names because of the way I look and laughed at for wearing clothes that highlight my not so ample cleavage. Who gives a fuck, the whole point of fashion is that it should have no rules so what is the big deal?

  11. I LOVE this post so much. I always been quite small naturally and people would call me anorexic or they would just come to me for no reason just to tell me that I’m small, which I absolutely hated, there so much more to me than my body. I hate that society makes people believe that we have to look in a specific way or else we can’t fit in. Media should empower people we are all different and that is what makes unique and hence amazingly beautiful.

    • Anna Maria, thank you so very much! I love everything you said on your comment! No discrimination should happen, especially from the social media. You should feel beautiful no matter what! Cheers!

  13. You are not only beautiful inside and out but you are also an exceptionally talented writer. It is difficult sometimes to deal with body image issues especially when the media is constantly putting us down but we need to tell them to go away and learn to love the bodies we have been given x

  14. Truly agreeing with you, about loving your own body. It is our own body and we are loving it because, it is the only thing in the world which is only ours. I really don’t care what other think or say, just Love yourself and be yourself. I loved your dress and it suits you really well.

  15. What a positive, refreshing post. Everyone should think about their body this way. Our society puts too much pressure on people to look a certain way when it’s all really irrelevant when you think of all the stuff going on in the world that’s really important. God made us all perfect in his eyes and whomever doesn’t like it can go pound sand. Ha ha

  16. You are a beautiful and a wonderful person, don’t let anybody tell you any different.
we all are beautiful in our own unique ways. it all boils down to our own perceptions about ourselves and somewhere the booming industry i.e fashion is to blame for this. the objectification of perfect bodies and stuff like that has moulded our mindsets. I am glad that people are stepping up to break this stigma.
    GOD SPEED!

  17. I love reading posts like these. Body positivity and understanding that we are more than just our looks takes years to fully comprehend. Knowing your self-worth and how badass you are is a process that goes on throughout your life. Thank you for spreading this positivity!

  18. I do this all the time. I sometimes forget the beauty is more than the outside but skin deep. I know I need to lose weight. It’s hard to find time though when you have an almost two-year-old running around.

    • Everything is relative, you have to learn to love everything about your body and if you still want to change aspects of it, that is fine! But you have to remember you are beautiful inside and outside!

  19. In essence we are all the same. The problem is that from a young age we are in a way trained to want to look a certain way thanks to the media. It’s great there are more and more body confident people who are all shapes and sizes sharing stories online. I lack confidence in a big way so appearing on my blog is out at the moment.

    • It takes time, had big issues with showing my body, since I have always been a bigger size, but now I like saying that this is me, if I don’t love myself, then who is? If you ever need anything or anyone to talk to, please don’t hesitate!

  20. I completely agree with all of this. I have struggled for so long to own my body, I have had anorexia throughout my whole adult life and it has taken me so long to accept my body. Thank you for this.

  21. It has taken me a long time to remotely appreciate my body. It’s oneof those things that you have to reaffirm constantly, or you slip right back into the trap of thinking negatively about yourself. Thanks for this body positive post!

  22. Kallia you look gorgeous, girl! This is a very inspiring post for everyone as at some point we all feel uncomfortable of our body. We need to remember that our body is just an extension of us, it cannot define who we are. Being comfortable in our skin is very important, especially when the world is waiting to bring you down.

  23. I enjoyed your post. I think your attitude to body image is very positive. On the subject of style well I’m all for wearing what makes you happy and what you like . I love that look on you and think you chose a very fresh and colourful outfit that is cheerful to wear but still flatters you . Well done!

  26. I’m so glad that I see people with this perspective! I’ve been struggling with this in the past, and it’s really difficult to love yourself in the world we live in, but everything starts with YOU. Once you realize your worth and make peace with yourself, everything else will just follow! My advice to everyone out there: Fall in love with yourself, cause this relationship lasts forever ❤
